Unit 4 of Kalinin NPP released for commercial operation Communications Department of ROSATOM, PUBLISHED September 28, 2012 On the 25th of September, 2012, a ceremony was held to commission Unit 4 of Kalinin NPP (Udomlya, Tver Region) for the commercial operation. At the ceremony Director General of Rosenergoatom Yevgeny Romanov and Director of NIAEP Valery Limarenko, in the presence of Director General of ROSATOM Sergey Kirienko and Governor of Tver Region Andrey Shevelev, signed a record of the unit acceptance for the commercial operation. The head of ROSATOM handed over to Kalinin NPP Plant Manager Mikhail Kanyshev the permit to operate Unit 4. Sergey Kirienko greeted the ceremony participants on the power unit commissioning for the commercial operation. “The stage of a large, serious and long work has been completed. Today we commission for the commercial operation a piece of art, the unit the colossal committed and high-skilled labor of large teams is behind,” the head of ROSATOM said. According to Kirienko, during the construction the Russian nuclear workers demonstrated that they can build on time and within the allocated funds. He added that in the course of Unit 4 construction nearly 10% of a total funding had been saved, i.e. RUB7 Billion out of RUB76 Billion allocated. “Unit 4 has become the proof of a feasibility of building a power unit nearly from the scratch within preset timeframe and, moreover, with a sizable saving of RUB7 Billion,” the head of ROSATOM emphasized. According to Kirienko, the unit construction completion is the restoration of continuity of the Soviet nuclear industry achievements. Unit 4 of Kalinin NPP is most up-to-date of the existing units in Russia at the present time. Unlike units of Phase One, this unit is equipped with a digital control system, which is more convenient for operators and allows multiple redundancy of the unit control system. A number of employees of Kalinin NPP, Rosenergoatom, NIAEP, and subcontractors have been given federal and departmental awards for committed labor and great personal contribution to Unit 4 commissioning for the commercial operation. Construction of Kalinin NPP Phase Two of Units 3 and 4 with VVER-1000 reactors was started as back as 1984. The construction was suspended in the 1990s; Unit 3 was put on line in 2004. The decision to continue building Unit 4 was made in 2005. The construction works resumed in 2007 after the Rosekspertiza’s statement and Rostechnadzor’s license had been obtained. On the 20th of October, 2011, the first fuel assembly was loaded into the reactor to start the first criticality program at the unit. On the 8th of November, 2011, the reactor installation was brought to the minimum controlled power. On the 22nd of November, 2011, the test connection of Unit 4 generation to the grid was carried out. On the 24th of November, 2011, the first power program of the unit started. On the 12th of December, 2011 Kalinin NPP Unit 4 power was raised up to 50% of the rated value in the presence of Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin.
