Russia Calls for UN Security Council Meeting on N.Korea RIA Novosti, PUBLISHED March 14, 2013 Russia’s UN envoy Vitaly Churkin has called for an extraordinary meeting of the UN Security Council on Tuesday to discuss the recent nuclear test conducted by North Korea. The meeting called for by the envoy from Russia, which holds the rotating presidency in the UN Security Council, is expected to focus on a draft resolution that aims to broad sanctions against North Korean officials and organizations connected with Pyongyang’s nuclear missile program. Churkin said earlier that the resolution was drafted by the United States and the 15-member UN Security Council was likely to pass it. The international community condemned North Korea on February 12 after Pyongyang confirmed it had conducted a third nuclear test, in defiance of UN resolutions and appeals from its neighbors. Seismic activity was detected in North Korea at 11:58 a.m. Korean time (02:58 GMT) on February 12, fuelling suspicions the country had carried out an underground nuclear test, as the area is not earthquake-prone.
