Two More GLONASS Stations to Open in Brazil – Brazilian Foreign Minister

Two more GLONASS stations are to open in the Brazilian states of Pernambuco and Rio Grande do Sul, Brazilian Foreign Minister Luiz Alberto Figueiredo said in an interview with RIA Novosti Monday.

“In the field of space cooperation, I would like to note Brazil’s successful experience working with Russia’s GLONASS satellite navigation system. This system will expand with new stations in the states of Pernambuco and Rio Grande do Sul, in addition to the existing one at the University of Brasilia,” Figueiredo stated.

The GLONASS network, which was put into operation in 1993, is considered Russia’s answer to GPS. The network provides real-time positioning and speed data for surface, sea and airborne objects.

According to the Brazilian Foreign Minister, the technological alliance between Brazil and Russia is an important element of bilateral relations, as it facilitates modernization and global competitiveness for both countries.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is to meet his Brazilian counterpart Dilma Rousseff on July 14, in the country’s capital, Brasilia, as a part of his Latin American tour. On Friday, Putin made a daylong stop in Cuba, where he met with Cuban President Raul Castro and his brother Fidel Castro. On Saturday, Putin went to Argentina, where he signed a number of nuclear energy deals. On Sunday, President Putin attended the World Cup final in Rio de Janeiro.

Putin is to attend the BRICS summit in the Brazilian city of Fortaleza on July 15-16, where he is to discuss the prospects for economic integration, challenges to sustainable development, trade and simplification of visa regimes with his counterparts from Brazil, China, India and South Africa.
