Russia, Israel Joining Efforts to Improve International Terrorism Law

RIA Novosti, PUBLISHED 23.07.2014

At meetings in Jerusalem Russia’s Federation Council members, led by the council’s foreign affairs committee chairman Mikhail Margelov, raised the proposal for a unified approach to terrorism. “As lawmakers we could propose to the international organizations, first of all the UN, to finally define this term and the approach to eliminating terrorists,” Vladimir Kulakov, first deputy chairman of procedures committee and head of Russia’s delegation to the OSCE Parliamentarian Assembly, was quoted as saying by the statement.

Russia’s Israeli counterparts welcomed the initiative, the statement said, adding, “Yariv Levin, a coalition chairman in Israeli Parliament agreed with the importance of such work and expressed readiness to bring the international law in accordance with contemporary conditions, when war is waged not between regular armies of states, but with terrorist groups, which shield themselves with civilians.”

Russian senators also discussed during the meetings the situation in Middle East, Iran’s nuclear ambitions and Russian-Israeli relations. “We value the strategic dialogue with Israeli partners, the high level and the feeling of trust in our bilateral relations,” Margelov said, according to the statement.
