Pilot operation in 18-month cycle has been completed at sixth unit of Novovoronezh NPP

AtomInfo.Ru, PUBLISHED 27.11.2023

The pilot operation of unit No. 6 of the Novovoronezh NPP in the 18-month fuel cycle mode has been successfully carried out.

Following the results of the pilot operation, the reporting documents were sent to the Rostechnadzor.

After receiving an expert opinion and changing the terms of the license, Novovoronezh NPP's Unit No. 6 will be put into commercial operation in the 18-month fuel cycle mode.

Since 2016, after commissioning, power unit No. 6 of the Novovoronezh NPP has operated three fuel cycles in a 12-month mode: unloading of spent and loading of fresh nuclear fuel was carried out once a year.

In August 2020, pilot operation was launched with an 18-month mode as part of the fourth and fifth cycles.

The increase in the duration of the fuel cycle became possible due to an increase in the average enrichment of nuclear fuel and the use of more gadolinium oxide as a neutron absorber in the fuel assemblies of the VVER-1200 reactor plant.

Similar work is being carried out at the seventh power unit of the Novovoronezh NPP. Its transfer to an 18-month mode is scheduled for March 2024.

The secondary sources are already helping to reduce the consumption of natural uranium for the operation of nuclear power plants, but the main breakthrough in the efficiency of uranium use is expected after the widespread introduction of the closed nuclear fuel cycle (NFC).
