IAEA has issued a technical document on global inventories of secondary uranium supplies

AtomInfo.Ru, PUBLISHED 04.12.2023

The IAEA has issued a technical document analyzing the available secondary uranium supplies.

The title of the document is INTERNATIONAL ATOMIC ENERGY AGENCY, Global Inventories of Secondary Uranium Supplies, IAEA-TECDOC-2030, IAEA, Vienna (2023).

The document contains 91 pages and 21 illustrations, and there is also an appendix. The document language is English.

The terms of purchase of a hard copy of the document are available at this link. The current price is 22 euros, the electronic version is available for free (see the link above).

Uranium mining and consumption are not directly correlated with each other. As shown in the figure below, in the first decades of the development of nuclear energy, uranium mining was carried out at a faster pace, and since the early 90s, the global nuclear industry has largely covered its uranium needs from stocks.

The document provides a comprehensive assessment of publicly available information on current secondary uranium supplies, including at the regional and national levels.

The secondary sources are already helping to reduce the consumption of natural uranium for the operation of nuclear power plants, but the main breakthrough in the efficiency of uranium use is expected after the widespread introduction of the closed nuclear fuel cycle (NFC).
