PRIS - 20 thousand reactor years AtomInfo.Ru, PUBLISHED 19.09.2024 The global nuclear energy industry has reached a landmark milestone. According to the PRIS database maintained by the IAEA, the total number of reactor years of operation of nuclear power units in the world has exceeded 20 thousand. To date, the PRIS base has 415 nuclear power units in operation. Its total installed net capacity is 373.735 GWe. The operation of 25 power units with a total net capacity of 21.272 GWe has been suspended. Almost all of it are located in Japan (21 units), where post-Fukushima safety checks are ongoing. 62 power units with a total capacity of 64.971 GWe are under construction. The undisputed leader is China, where 28 power units are being built. It should be noted that only those units where the first concrete was laid on the nuclear island fall into the PRIS database. 211 power units are considered to be permanently shutdown. The leaders are the USA (41 units), Britain (36 units), Germany (33 units) and Japan (27 units). Decommissioning has not been completed on most of the permanently shutdown units, and theoretically some of it may return to service (such options are currently being discussed in the United States). In total, nuclear power plants are in operation or have been in operation in 38 countries. The United States remains the leader in the number of active units - 94 units. China is actively catching up with them. Having launched its first unit in 1991, today Chinese nuclear scientists are already working on 56 units and, with their pace of construction, they can catch up and overtake America at the end of the next decade or in the early 2040s. Of the 38 countries, only four countries have completely abandoned nuclear energy - Italy, Kazakhstan, Lithuania and Germany. Three countries on this list are newcomers whose nuclear power plants are just being built - Bangladesh, Turkey and Egypt (and all these nuclear power plants are being built by Rosatom using Russian VVER technologies). If we analyze the statistics, then the main problem of nuclear energy in the world can be recognized as the gradual aging of power units. More than 160 units have already crossed the threshold of 40 years, and some old units have reached the age of 55. Therefore, in order to maintain the current position of nuclear energy in the world, the pace of construction of new units and replacement units must be increased.
