Ghana will decide on the site before the end of the year AtomInfo.Ru, PUBLISHED 22.02.2022 The Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (Nuclear Power Ghana, NPG) will complete by the end of 2022 the selection of a preferred site for the construction of the country's first nuclear power plant. NPG head Prof. Benjamin J.B Nyarko explained in mid-February comments to the local press that four candidate sites are currently being explored. In turn, the executive director of NPG Dr. Stephen Yamoah told reporters that the commission analyzes historical data for all four sites. Upon completion of the work, NPG will prepare a report called "Site Approval Report" and submit it to the regulatory body for review and approval. "We received a lot of historical data from more than a dozen institutions: seismic data and flood data. We also received information from the Ghana Statistical Office on the population and its projected growth," Yamoa said. "All this is one of the criteria that we will take into account when choosing a site for a nuclear power plant, because the nuclear plant will not be built in a (densely) populated area, and therefore we need to know data on the current and projected population," he added. Yamoa. Ghana is among the African countries that have firmly decided to develop nuclear energy. According to the plans, the first nuclear power plant should be built approximately by 2030.
