A success in El-Dabaa NPP project Rosatom, PUBLISHED 24.04.2025 Specialists from the Russian general contractor of the project, under the supervision of experts from the NPPA Nuclear Power Plants Authority - the owner and future operator of the plant - achieved a milestone by confirming the completion of the first-phase concrete pouring for the second level of the inner containment structure of the reactor building at Unit 2 of El-Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant. The inner containment structure is a cylindrical building that houses the nuclear reactor and the equipment of the plant's primary circuit. The second level of the inner containment consists of 12 prefabricated which were manufactured on-site at El-Dabaa plant. Each segment is 12 meters long, 14 meters high, and weighs between 60 and 90 tons. The second level of the inner containment vessel is poured in two phases. The concrete pouring works for the first phase were completed on Saturday, April 19, while the second phase is scheduled to be completed in May. Each phase involves approximately 1,200 cubic meters of concrete. During the first phase, all concrete pumps available on the nuclear island were used, and the pouring process continued uninterrupted for 24 hours, involving around 100 workers. Dr. Eng. Sherif Helmy, the Board Chairman of Egyptian Nuclear Power Plants Authority, stated: "The Nuclear Power Plants Authority has witnessed a new achievement in the ongoing progress of El-Dabaa NPP construction. Thanks to God, a new stage in the construction of the second nuclear unit has been completed, with the pouring of the first phase of the second level of the inner containment vessel in the reactor building. This accomplishment is the result of the combined efforts of the Egyptian team, represented by NPPA - the owner - and the Russian team, represented by Atomstroyexport - the general contractor." Mr. Alexey Kononenko, Deputy Director of Atomstroyexport and Project Director for El-Dabaa NPP construction, stated: "The reactor building of the second nuclear unit is steadily approaching one of the key milestones of 2025 - the completion of the concrete pouring for the second level of the inner containment vessel, which is scheduled for May of this year. Work is progressing confidently and smoothly at the construction site, supported by the fruitful cooperation with the Egyptian owner, NPPA, and the high professional standards of our contractor colleagues." It is worth noting that the significance of El-Dabaa NPP lies in the fact that it is not merely an electricity generation project, but rather a cornerstone for achieving Egypt's Vision 2030 and its objectives. The plant is environmentally friendly due to its zero carbon emissions, and it stands as one of the largest infrastructure projects supporting the development of various economic sectors and the localization of nuclear technology. This strongly contributes to strengthening Egypt's economy, positioning it as a leading nation in the Middle East and Africa, and placing it on the map of advanced countries in all fields related to the peaceful applications of nuclear energy, within the framework of implementing an integrated nuclear program that brings prosperity, peace, progress, and well-being to Egypt. In light of the current global energy crisis, the El-Dabaa NPP will contribute to adding a new source to Egypt's energy mix, especially as it is one of the most important safe and secure sources of energy.
